Directed Writing

Dear Headteacher,

On behalf of all the students in the scholl, I am writing to ask you to reconsider your decision to ban Wikipedia from the school's computer network.

Wikipedia went online on 15 January 2001 and has since been one of the most popular sites in the world. The creator wanted to give "free access to the sum of all human knowledge." Hence it is free in the first place. The philosophy of Wikipedia is that the collective knowledge of millions of people is more complete and unbiased than that of one unchallenged researcher, however expert.

I agree that many students abuse the power of Wikipedia and that our information should be from a variety of sources not just from the internet but by books too. I also agree that Wikipedia has a number of benefits which can prove useful when researching.

One of the benefits of Wikipedia is that the information in it is simplified. This allows us to have a sort of stepping stone that helps us get a basic understanding of the topic. This can help students with a topic that they are struggling on especially the less intelligent ones.

Another benefit is that Wikipedia has a policy that requires all its contributors to cite verifiable online sources for the topics they write on. Giving proof that the content is reliable. We can also use these sources to expand our research. There is also the benefit of where and when information is changed onto the Wikipedia. Thanks to the fact that anyone can edit. Wikipedia is constantly changing, pages can be made or updates causing the site to grow every year. This allows Wikipedia to be constantly updated on the new discoveries made everyday.

This concludes my letter on the issue. I hope this letter has given you enough reasons not to block Wikipedia. If not then at least I could say that I have tried.
