Into the Heart of Borneo and Animals of the Amazon Forest
Summary
Trees that were very high surrounded the river and there were many different types of species. There were many different parasitic plants growing around the river like ferns and creepers. There were foaming little tributaries, islets and shingle banks strewn with huge rounded boulders, half hidden coves scooped round by whirlpools. Here the river was clear, deep green from the reflection of the trees. The animals adapted themselves in various ways. The animals were small because if they were too big it would cause them to be easily spotted. So they have to learn to camouflage themselves amongst the plantations and only move at night to not be spotted and it makes it harder to be seen. There are many ways that the animals survive in the forest. The birds have long curved claws to ensure a solid grip on the branches. The ground beetles have comb-toothed claws to cling to enable them to escape upwards into the trees when there is flooding. As there is no still water the frogs have to lay eggs in bromeliad flowers.
