The Nightingale

The Nightingale

Nightingales mean night songstress in Anglo - Saxon because the male Nightingale sings at night to attract a mate. They are omnivorous birds. They eat insects, seeds, nuts and small fruits. The predators of the Nightingale are rats, foxes, cats and reptiles like snakes.

Nightingales have black eyes that look like marbles. They have brown and white feathers with a brown short beak without any teeth and it has a long reddish tail. The body is sixteen centimetres long. Nightingales weigh between fifteen to twenty-two grams. Nightingales can sing in the day and night. Male Nightingales can sing up to seven hours. Female Nightingales can lay two to five eggs each time. There are five varieties of Nightingales. One variety lives in south and northern of South Afica, Europe, Uganda, Kenya and southwestern Asia. Two other varieties live only in Asia and Africa.

Nightingales travel vast distances every year in order to migrate between the north and the south. They mate in spring. They can live for one and three years. I like Nightingales because they can sing melodiously. I wish I can hold a Nightingale in my hands some day.
